BARELY THERE

The Barely There series is an artistic project, part of the Master’s thesis of Aura Kajaniemi. The context of this work is the exploration of empty clothing as work of art and justification of their existence as non­wearable representations. The project focuses on how a traditionally functional piece of clothing obtains its value as an artwork and questions its relation to identity. The technique used is an experimental method of bead embroidery without a fabric base. The pieces embrace the shape of clothing but come to their existence apart from it, generating art objects in which what is seen becomes more important than what is missing.

Barely There -teossarja on Aura Kajaniemen maisterin lopputyön taiteellinen osuus. Teokset tutkivat vaatteen tyhjää olemusta – vaatetta ilman ihmistä – esitettynä taideteoksena. Keskiössä on kysymys kuinka perinteisesti funktionaalisena nähty objekti saa arvonsa taideteoksena ja mitä lähestymistapoja töiden tulkintaan löytyy, erityisesti suhteessa identiteettiin. Teokset on toteutettu kokeellisen helmikirjonnan metodein, ilman kangaspohjaa. Työt sisältävät vaatteen tyhjän muodon, mutta eivät sen funktiota. Se, mitä jää, on mukaelma, muisto tai mielikuva siitä, mikä oli, nähtynä sen kautta, mitä on. Vaate saa tällöin olemuksen esineenä, muotona, joka edustaa puettavuuden sijaan itseään.
