Life of Garments investigates different aspects of clothing culture in trying to understand the true significance of a garment. Clothes are looked at through their materiality, the form of a garment, how they manifest themselves in our everyday life, and through their connection with the human body. Aesthetically, the work draws inspiration from traditional Japanese aesthetics.
This thesis focuses on woven textile design and designing textiles through finishings. Knowledge gained from body mapped human thermoregulation is used as a base to generate ideas for breathable, form-fitting and insulating areas in a garment. These purposeful areas are realised through seamless weaving with jacquard weaving or with different finishing techniques. In order to make visible how the weight, drape and surface qualities of the textile define the form of a garment, six identical outfits were designed.
